Seek First
When God’s Order Becomes Our Priority
“But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” Matthew 6:33 · KJV
There are moments when life appears to demand our attention from every direction. Responsibilities need handling. Questions need answers. Plans need forming. Needs feel urgent, and the mind begins calculating how everything will come together.
Yet Jesus gives us a clear and settled order:
Seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness.
This is more than encouragement to include God in our plans. It is an invitation to place Him before every plan—to allow His Kingdom, His will and His truth to establish the order from which everything else flows.
First Is a Position
To seek God first is not simply to speak to Him before beginning the day. It is to give Him the highest position in how we see, choose, respond and live.
God is not one priority among many. He is the One through whom every other part of life finds its proper place.
When His Kingdom comes first, our decisions are no longer governed by fear, pressure or urgency. We begin from what God has said rather than from what circumstances appear to suggest.
The question changes from “How will I make everything work?” to “What has God established, and how do I walk faithfully within it?”
This is the freedom of divine order.
We are no longer trying to hold every outcome together. We are trusting the One who already sees the beginning, the journey and the finish.
Seeking Is Not Striving
Seeking first does not mean anxiously searching for a God who is distant or hidden from us.
God is present.
His Word is available. His Spirit leads. His wisdom remains accessible. Seeking is the intentional turning of our attention towards the One who is already near.
Striving says
Everything depends on me.
Seeking says
Everything begins with God.
Striving produces pressure because it places the weight of the outcome upon human strength. Seeking produces peace because it returns that weight to its rightful place.
We still act. We still plan. We still carry out the work God has placed in our hands. But our actions flow from trust rather than fear, and from obedience rather than the need to control.
The Kingdom Establishes the Order
The Kingdom of God is where His rule is recognised, His will is welcomed and His truth is obeyed.
Seeking the Kingdom first means allowing God’s order to take precedence over the patterns of the world.
The world says: Secure everything first, then rest.
Understand everything first, then trust.
See the evidence first, then believe.
The Kingdom says: Trust God, and move as He leads. Receive His peace before the circumstances change. Walk by faith, not by sight.
When God’s order becomes our priority, we stop measuring our security solely by what we can see. Our confidence becomes rooted in who God is.
Circumstances may change, but His character does not. The route may unfold one step at a time, but His faithfulness remains complete.
And His Righteousness
Jesus did not only say to seek the Kingdom. He also said to seek God’s righteousness.
This means desiring what is right in God’s sight—not merely what is quick, convenient or personally advantageous.
Seeking His righteousness shapes both our direction and our conduct. It affects how we speak, how we treat people, how we manage responsibility and how we respond when no immediate answer is visible.
It keeps us from pursuing the right outcome through the wrong method.
The Kingdom cannot be separated from the character of the King.
Where God’s rule is welcomed, truth, love, justice, mercy, integrity and obedience must also be welcomed.
What Has Been Taking First Place?
Not everything occupying first place announces itself openly.
Sometimes fear takes first place by becoming the first voice we consult. Sometimes urgency takes first place by persuading us that immediate action matters more than clear direction. Sometimes circumstances take first place by becoming more authoritative to us than God’s Word.
Seeking first invites a simple realignment:
God has the first word.
Before fear interprets the situation, God has spoken.
Before pressure dictates the pace, God has established peace.
Before circumstances present their report, God remains faithful.
This does not deny reality. It places every reality beneath the authority of God.
The Promise of Addition
Jesus said that when we seek first the Kingdom and God’s righteousness, “all these things shall be added.”
The promise is not that we control how every need will be met. The promise is that our Father already knows what we need.
Addition is God’s responsibility. Alignment is ours.
We seek Him. We listen. We obey. We faithfully handle what He places before us. Then we trust Him with the provision, timing, doors and outcomes that belong to Him.
This releases us from living as though everything depends on our ability to predict the next step.
God’s provision is not restricted to what we can currently see. His wisdom is not limited by the routes we already know. His answer does not require our anxiety to bring it into being.
A Life Put Back in Order
When God is first, life does not become empty of responsibility. It becomes free from misplaced weight.
Peace returns to its rightful place. Clarity is no longer forced. Work becomes faithful stewardship rather than anxious striving. Decisions become responses to God’s direction rather than reactions to pressure.
We begin to recognise that seeking first is not merely a command for difficult moments. It is a way of living.
God first in thought.
God first in desire.
God first in decision.
God first in action.
And from that established order, everything else finds its proper position.
Seek First
The Kingdom of God is not an accessory to the life we are building. It is the foundation from which life is meant to be lived.
So before chasing the answer, seek the One who already knows it.
Before forcing the door, listen for His direction.
Before carrying tomorrow, receive the grace appointed for today.
Seek first—not because God is withholding what you need, but because in Him, every need is seen, every step is known and every good thing is brought into its proper order.
God first. His Kingdom first. His righteousness first.
Everything else rests safely beneath His authority.
